Keeping an Indoor Cat Busy in Autumn: Cheap Enrichment That Actually Works
Share
Every autumn, indoor cats get a little more restless. Windows close, bugs disappear, and the outdoor entertainment channel goes dark โ usually right around the same time their humans get busier. The fix is not expensive, and it is not a $200 cat tree. It is four cheap habits.
1. Rotate toys instead of buying more
Cats habituate to everything. A toy that has been on the floor for three weeks is furniture; the same toy pulled out of a drawer after three weeks away is brand new. Keep two-thirds of the toys in a closed box and swap the set weekly. This works best with a small batch of different shapes: plush kickers, a crinkle toy, a ball, something with a bell.
2. Catnip is a tool, not a treat
Roughly half of cats respond to catnip โ the rest respond to silvervine, which is worth trying if your cat shrugs at nip. Either way, use it as reset button: when your cat is flat and bored, offer a catnip toy and you usually get ten minutes of activity out of it. A 4-pack of plush catnip toys ($15.99) is the cheapest version of this we know of, and the four shapes let you rotate them like games.
3. Make them work for one meal a day
Free-feeding a bored cat is the single most common enrichment mistake. Put a portion of the daily food in a puzzle feeder, a cardboard egg carton, or scatter it across a rug โ anything that turns eating into five minutes of sniffing and pawing. Enrichment is not "play time," it is problem-solving.
4. Give them a better window
In autumn the remaining interest is birds and falling leaves. A perch or a blanket on the sill, positioned so your cat can watch something with movement, is worth more than most toys. If your cat is a senior or overweight, a low perch counts โ the point is a view, not a climb.
The five-minute daily routine
Morning: rotate the toy set and hide two toys. Evening: five minutes of wand play, ending with a small success โ always let the cat catch the toy. Before bed: scatter a portion of dinner. That routine costs nothing and uses the toys you already own.
